About the Hardwoodist
An NBA data laboratory for overthinkers.
The Hardwoodist is the internet home of The Hardwoodist Research Institute (HWRI), a leading basketball think-tank and analytics institute.
The Institute is always busy - busy pushing the bounds of basketball understanding. We have spent many decades refining, and have had our hand in many of the innovations you see today. From our many attempts at dictating offensive flow based on geometrical concepts inspired by different polygons1, to the sponsorship of the lab experiment that created both Andrei Kirilenko and Shawn Marion2, the Institute has been working behind the scenes to enhance the game we love. Now, finally, after many cordial discussions, bureaucratic meetings, and out-of-court settlements, we are bringing our research to the public.
Dispatches is where you'll find much of this research as we slowly release files from deep in our archives, and release brand-new, never before seen findings, backed by our one-of-a-kind database and data investigation tools.
Foundation
The Hardwoodist Research Institute was founded in 1946 and is funded in part by occasional distributions from a jar on Mark Tatum’s desk labelled “Draymond.”
